Capital Region BOCES Gets Help With Shared Food Program

Capital Region BOCES is expanding its efforts to combine area school districts' food programs and is looking at eventually creating a centralized kitchen that would serve multiple districts.

The efforts were bolstered by a Regional Economic Development Council grant for more than $900,000 that was announced last month.

School districts mostly operate their own food programs – some hire outside vendors and others run programs in-house – but BOCES hopes districts will see a benefit to transferring some of their food service operations to a regional hub.

The regional operation could help manage lunch programs, coordinate cooperative purchasing, take over the clerical work of processing free and reduced-price lunch paperwork and, in time, begin producing and delivering meals to schools in different districts.

Rochester District Sues Over Contaminated Building

The Rochester City School District has sued its landlord at troubled 690 St. Paul St. over its alleged failure to address environmental and structural problems.

The lawsuit relates to a sequence of events beginning with the dumping of toxic chemicals more than a century ago and culminating last December, when students at Rochester Prep High School abandoned their sub-leased space in the building over fears of unsafe air and water. The eight-story building has been subject to oversight from the state Department of Environmental Conservation since 2009 due to the presence of trichloroethene, or TCE, an industrial solvent and likely carcinogen. The district has leased space from the owner, Genesee Valley Real Estate Co., since 2008; before that it housed a now-closed charter school whose employees often complained about headaches and breathing problems.
