Hudson Falls Students Learn CPR, Other Emergency Procedures

Hudson Falls High School students recently received lessons in cardiopulmonary resuscitation from American Red Cross volunteers in their physical education classes. The students also learned how to use an automated external defibrillator and received training in disaster preparedness.

Normal response time for rescue squads is 5 minutes, and that may be too late in an emergency.

“You are the first responders,” said Dr. Kathy Braico, who conducted the training.

The Red Cross reached out to the school district a few months ago, after a new state regulation requiring such training went into effect, and offered the training free of charge, according to Michelle Burke, the district’s head nurse and director of school wellness programs.

Cuomo’s Budget Proposal Extends Reimbursement for Safety Improvements

Governor Cuomo delivered his 2016 State of the State and Executive Budget Proposal on January 13 which outlined his agenda for the year. The governor proposed a $2.1 billion increase in education aid over two years. He emphasized that the proposed 2017 education budget of $25 billion would be the highest in New York’s history. The governor’s briefing book explains that the proposed increase would include $991 million in 2016-17 for a total of $24.2 billion.

The Executive Budget extends a provision of law regarding school safety to apply to expenses incurred in 2015-16. Under this law, certain safety system improvement expenditures are eligible for a reimbursement rate up to 10 percentage points higher than a district's current building aid ratio. The previous law had only applied to expenses incurred in 2012-13, 2013-14, and 2014-15.

Hamburg School Board Considers $9.7 Million Capital Project

Hamburg School Board members are considering a $9.7 million capital project that would go to the voters during the annual budget vote in May.

There would be repairs and improvements to each school, but the big project driving the timing of the project is the replacement of the roof at Charlotte Avenue School.

Much of the proposed $9.7 million project is necessary maintenance of facilities, with brick repointing and sidewalk and curb replacements. There also would be work done in updating school libraries, fiber-optics and several auditoriums.

Reminder: Building Condition Survey Open Through June

The 2015 Building Condition Survey (BCS) is now "live" for data entry.

The survey is accessed via the NYSED Application Business Portal (similar to the process for the Online Fire Safety Report) at  http://portal.nysed.gov/portal/page/portal/PortalApp

Instructions, including how to access the survey via the portal, can be found at http://www.p12.nysed.gov/facplan/BldgCondSurv.htm

Districts that are entering data themselves can use the portal directly with appropriate entitlements from the superintendent. For those that are having their consultants enter the data, the entitlements will need to be provided to the consultants by their superintendents.

The deadline for submission of the 2015 BCS has been extended to June 30, 2016.
