The Fred Hack Memorial Scholarships were established in the mid-1990s in honor of the Association’s first executive director. NYSSFA awards six $2,000 scholarships annually to dependent children of its Active and Affiliate members.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Applicant must be a dependent child of an NYSSFA Active or Affiliate member who has completed one year of full-time continuous membership by April 1, 2023.
- Applicant must be a student enrolled in or planning to enroll in a full-time program of study leading to an Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree at an accredited post-secondary school.
- Applicant must not have received two previous awards.
- Applicant must not have received an award the previous year.

2024 Recipients

Arianna Martinez, daughter of Paul Martinez, Director of Facilities for the Rocky Point Union Free School District and a member of NYSSFA’s Suffolk Chapter. She is majoring in mathematics and adolescence inclusive education at Nazareth University. “This summer I completed my practicum for my special education certification,” Arianna says. Next semester I will be student teaching full-time, and I am so excited! I have loved working with middle and high school mathematics students and teachers.
“I have earned a place on the Dean’s List every semester of my university experience so far. I have danced all my life, and I am a dance minor at Nazareth University. Ballet is my favorite style, I take as much ballet at Nazareth as I possibly can.”

Skyllar Withey, daughter of Colleen Withey, Custodial Supervisor for the Skaneateles Central School District and a member of NYSSFA’s Mid-State Chapter. She is planning to attend Johnson & Wales University as a culinary arts major. “I completed a two-year culinary arts program where I received an Outstanding Achievement Award as well as receiving a Career and Technical Endorsement,” Skyllar says. “I competed in multiple cooking competitions and volunteered for many district dinners and events. “Besides my love for cooking, I love music and singing. I participated in chorus groups like All County chorus, Madrigals, Women’s Chamber, A Cappella and NYSSMA solo festival.”

Jeffrey Ciurczak, son of David Ciurczak, Director of Facilities III for the Starpoint Central School District and a member of the Niagara Frontier Chapter. Jeffrey completed his first year of college at Erie Community College, and became the bowling team MVP that year. He is now attending Niagara University as a sports management major where during his first two semesters he made the Dean’s list.
“I’m a really big sports fans and that is the main reason why I decided to pursue a Sports Management Bachelor’s Degree.”

Casey Healy, son of Sean Healy, Custodial Supervisor for Starpoint Central School District. Casey is attending Rochester Institute of Technology as a Mechanical Engineering major. Some of Casey’s awards are RIT prep, Band Vice President, Dean’s List, and the RIT Presidential Award. His favorite activites are small engines repair, RIT pep band and design & fabrication.


Jenna Machuga & Jalynn Machuga daughters of John Machuga, Director of Facilities for the Campbell-Savona
Central School District.
Both Jenna & Jalynn are attending SUNY Univeristy at Buffalo. Jenna is majoring in Biomedical Engineering, while Jalynn is majoring is Biomedical Sciences.
Jenna’s awards and activities include National Honnor Society, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Marching Band, Captain of Varsity Volleyball, Captain of Varsity Basketball, Captain of Varsity Softball, Vice President of Band.
Jalynn awards and activities include National Honor Society, Class of 2024 Vice President, Band Club Historian, Top 10 of High Schools Graduating Class, Captain of the Volleyball, Basketball, and Softball Teams
